I've barbequed many times - but never by myself. I always get someone else to a) light it, b) decide how/when things are placed on the grill, c) tell me it's done.
Today, I had my writing friends over (we call ourselves the Javiers because we all made a point to put a character named Javier in our books). I barbequed for them, using my new gas grill and relying on no one but me for how things turned out.
I made:
- chicken and shrimp skewers, marinated in a garlic/lemon sauce
- veggies in a bbq pan, with potatoes, fennel, onions and red and green peppers
- eggplant (which my friend, Kate, supplied all cut & seasoned, but I grilled)
I managed to light the grill, warm it up, put on the food in the order I thought made sense, and watch it.
Everything turned out great, and my barbeque confidence is sky-high.
Maybe someday I'll take on what I consider the ultimate bbq food: lobster.
