Life List Day 1-Treat Myself to a Bottle of Dom Perignon Champagne

It’s Day 1 of my quest to do something new, fun or challenging every day. It also marks the day I received the first copy of my novel in the mail. It seemed worth a toast to me! And what could be more delightfully stereotypical for toasting than the granddaddy of French champagnes, Dom Perignon?

I’m sure Dom isn’t what the cool kids are drinking these days. I believe I revealed myself for the square I am with the very term cool kids. And by calling it Dom. Then there’s the use of the word square. So here’s the thing: It took me a half-hour at BevMo! to screw up the courage to pay $114 for one bottle of champagne. I don’t know why it was so hard. It’s not like I can’t spend it, or like I never dole out money. Just yesterday I handed over $20 for my son’s lunches, $75 for his yearbook, and slapped down my Visa for $175 in new school clothes. Never flinched.

But I never spend that kind of money on me…at least not on a luxury item. I only went through with it because the BevMo! salesgirl shamed me by being thrilled when I told her I was celebrating my new novel.

Alas, you can lead a writer to Dom Perignon, but you can’t make her drink. I bought it, and I’ll have to claim that as my victory. But I couldn’t waste a bottle of Dom on a Monday. It seems strange just to toast ME. So it sits in my closet…waiting for me to discover my inner Clairol-girl and decide I’m Worth It.

So I wonder, do you ever have a hard time treating yourself? Is it easier to shower attention and gifts on your kids, family & friends than on you?

First of all, you can get it for around $100 at Costco.
Secondly, you always deserve a bottle of fancy champagne, especially on a Monday.
Thirdly, I didn't see a place to post this, but did you check out the fake bosom on that Kelly Pickler earlier in the season? Is she headed down the road to Dolly Parton-ville that fast?

A bottle of Dom, and no invitation for Sandra, not even a B.Y.O.D. email?

I also noticed that two of your three posts involve alcohol. Will the next thing on your list be rehab? I’m tired of starlets, rock stars, and aging directors going into rehab. I say it’s time for an optioned author to take the plunge.

Hey, here's an idea: I'll put "Jill --- intervention," on my list, and you put "Sandra --- intervention," on your list, and that way we'll watch each other's back.

Whoops! You had a specific question re: treating others before yourself.

As you know, my early female education has huge gaps, so I missed the selflessness lesson.

In Catholic school, I always cheated on my Lenten promises, lost count on my penance or rounded off, plus I think I might have skipped whole sections of the rosary. I tried to make up for it by adding extra sins in confession.

Does that count?

hahaahha.. I just started reading this. It is hard to spoil myself, especially when I think about all the other things I could be doing with that money. I would rather spoil my siblings, parents and boyfriend than buy something for me. But I did it last christmas for the first time ever. I bought myself a ring. It was on sale and still $400. Hahahaha.... I couldn't even convince myself to wear it for almost two weeks. I think you're convincing me to do this life list. =)

I always wanted one of those bottles of champagne from the movies, you know the ones, with the handpainted flowers on the bottle. Pretty. As a wedding present my hubby to be trekked all over and finally found one for a small fortune. It's beautiful. I can the present tense because it's still in the cupboard all wrapped up to keep it nice. We've been married 11 years and we still haven't drank it. I think we should. This weekend darn it! Thank you. :)
