Life List Day 110 - Hit the Casino on 7-7-7

Today being July 7, 2007 - or 7-7-7 - my friend, Mary Jo, suggested we hit a casino, both in honor of such a "lucky" day and also our friend, Sue's, birthday. Vegas was more of a trek than we wanted, so we decided to check out the Morongo Casino in Cabazon (near Palm Springs).

The bad news: So did everybody else and their brother. The casino was MOBBED. Literally every one of the 2,000 slot machines and 100-plus gaming tables was occupied. There was a sort of low hum of despair rather than the buzz of hope (and the occasional clanging of a winning slot machine) that I've come to associate with a casino. At one point, Mary Jo gazed around at the teeming masses and said, "It looks like Ellis Island."

We killed time at a nightclub hoping things would clear out. They didn't. Around midnight we stood at the bank of video roulette tables and tried to start the wave (two guys participated, but then it died).

At 1:30 AM my friend dove for a vacated nickel slot machine.

By 2 AM - tired of the crowds and the confusing slot machines (one of us got a 777 and it didn't pay anything) we gave up and went to Denny's for breakfast.

OK. Even though it wasn't the gambling fest we'd hoped for, the evening wasn't a total bust: I left 40 cents up on the slots...and the experience was SO bad, it was good.

Well, that is very unfortunate. To get a 777 and not win anything. Vegas wasn't to bad, I guess just because of the sheer number of casinos that we actually have down here. But hey, in the end, Denny's was there to save the day.

p.s. You've been tagged. Check my blog for the details (I promise you don't have to do it, it's just a little thing to pass the time).

Wow! 7/7/07 was my brithday: I turned 30! And it was a great day :)!
I can't imagine what it must've been to wait the whole evening to play in the slots! But at least you spend a nice time with your friends, and ended up in a nice meal!
Cheers!

Morongo Resort Spa Whatever was the first stop on our recent roadtrip. Didn't fare well compared to other Native American sites we visted - like Chaco Canyon - but the rooms were more stylish.
Got a good dose of irony, lost five bucks to the so-called-slots, and vowed never to return.
